On 5 October 1930, the Kazakhstan’s first design institute KAZGOSPROYEKT was founded in Almaty by Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh SSR. In 1959, it was reorganized into the State Design Institute KAZGORSTROYPROYEKT. Our design institute became a home for maitres of Kazakhstan architecture such as Nikolay Ripinsky, Yury Ratushny, Lev Ukhobotov, Tokhtar Yeraliyev and others. We take pride that one of the national figures of our age Shota Valikhanov started his career in KAZGOR Design Academy. KAZGORSTROYPROYEKT employed in different years a starchitect Toleu Basenov and the authors of the first banknotes of independent Kazakhstan Timur Suleimenov and Hairulla Gabzhalilov and many others. This period is well known for a great number of iconic buildings designed to brighten Almaty and Kazakhstan: Kazakhstan Hotel, Republic Palace building, Abai Opera and Ballet Theatre, House of the Government of the Kazakh SSR (today’s Kazakhstan-British Technical University), Almaty Hotel, Dostyk Hotel, Pushkin Library (today’s National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan), Officers' Club (today’s Army Palace), Kazpotrebsoyuz building, Almaty Cotton Factory Palace of Culture (today’s Natalia. Sats’s Youth Theatre), Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Alatau Health Resort. KAZGORSTROYPROYEKT was the first to establish a standardized design school in Kazakhstan to be used, in particular, for seismically active regions. According to KAZGORSTROYPROYEKT’s designs, almost all cities and many villages of Kazakhstan have been rebuilt.
In 1993, the Design Institute KAZGORSTROYPROYEKT was reorganized into KAZGOR Design Academy. Today’s KAZGOR Design Academy is the Kazakhstan’s design leader. New-day material and technical base, skilled workforce, wealth of experience and competent management are components to success of the 21st century company that is on top of trends. According to KAZGOR’s design, the following buildings have been constructed: Republic of Kazakhstan President Fund and Office Building, Nursaya residential development in Astana, Nurly Tau mixed-use development and Rahat Towers mixed-use development (today’s Almaty Towers), FEZ Alatau Innovation Technologies Park as well as schools, kindergartens and a number of other socially important facilities.
